This is really a chronic and behavioral issue in dogs and some breeds are more prone to it than others. My dog ( a doberman) started showing back legs problems when he was 5 years old. The background to his behaviour change? Nothing really changed. One day I found a wound on his both rear legs, and they looked like big scratches. They did not heal in a week or so, so I started to observe them. Eventually I took the dog to see a doctor. The dog was diagnosed with “acral lick granuloma”. I first thought, this is going to be temporary, but 2 years later, I know it is a chronic skin disease, which may have some mental background to it, or as we found it may be a beginning of some very serious illness. In our case it was a beginning of heart failure, which is very final diagnosis for dogs….

Veterinarian first prescribed prednisone and antibiotics. Prednisone usually helps with inflammation and antibiotics (10 days supply) should faith the infection.

Did Antibiotics Help to Treat the Acral Lick Granuloma?

Hard to tell. His lesions were not inflamed really, they looked like a fresh big scratch. But I can really say, nothing really changed, and after 10 days on this treatment my dog was not healed.

The Prednison did not help either and my dog really became very irritated and bloated. Evidently the Prednison was not well taken by his body and I had to stop the steroid treatment.

My impression from the doctors diagnosis was, that this can be treated. I did not feel like any urge in his diagnosis to try other things. The “Elizabethan collar was recommended as well, but my dog was so depressed when wearing it , that I had to find other solution. I bought for him the kong cloud collar. This is a pillow like collar, more friendlier than the “shame collar.”. But I will recommend the Elizabethan collar better, if your dog can live with it.

My advise: Try to find the real reason your dog is licking his skin. Find a veterinarian, who would give your dog complete health test.
